Waste categories

Medicinal Waste

Medicinal waste can be classified in three categories;

  1. Cytotoxic and cytostatic medicines. (Hazardous) 18.01.08
  2. Pharmaceutical Medicines other than those classified as cytotoxic and cytostatic. (may still require specialist treatment / disposal). 18.01.09
  3. Non pharmaceutically active, no hazardous properties (e.g. saline and glucose) 20.01.32

Failure to separate the waste streams would require the waste to be classified as hazardous Medicinal waste which includes; expired, unused, spilt, contaminated and drugs no longer required.

Controlled drugs

Controlled drugs other than those dispensed for patient use are subject to the Misuse of Drugs Regulations (2001) covering the destruction and or disposal procedure.

Amalgam waste

All waste material containing mercury should be classified as hazardous waste (18 01 10* Amalgam waste for dental care). Dental practices are required to have amalgam separators fitted. Advice should be sought from Health and Safety when dealing with mercury spillage from sphygmomanometers.

Medical devices

Where implanted medical devices, as defined in the medical devices regulations, have been in contact with infectious bodily fluids they should be classified as infectious waste. If the device contains hazardous substances or components such as batteries the consignment note must accurately describe the waste.

Anatomical waste

Anatomical waste includes body parts or other recognisable anatomical items and should be classified as 18.01.02 body parts and organs including blood bags and blood preserves. However, if subject to special requirements to prevent infection they should be discarded as 18.01.03

Danni Waste

Ideal for the safe collection and transportation of glass and crockery, the SHARPSGUARD® Danni is colour-coded with a solid orange lid, handle and label making it easy to distinguish from other waste containers. It should be disposed of in landfill sites and therefore is not suitable for contaminated items.
